We used Francis Plumbing & Heating in the fall to replace our hot water tank and furnace in the same week after a friend recommended them. The experience was very smooth, professional, efficient, and the jobs were done on time, cleanly and were well priced. We also just had our air conditioner die in the first heat wave of the season and did not hesitate for a second before calling up Francis Plumbing & Heating. Once again, they delivered with exceptional responsiveness, quality, and value. Every one we've dealt with from that first phone call to receive a quote, to working with admin for payment and scheduling, to the employees in our home doing the installation have been amazing; so polite and friendly, so knowledgeable and helpful, so hardworking and efficient. HVAC and plumbing jobs are never fun because they are inconvenient and tend to cost a lot but Francis Plumbing & Heating Ltd has made our experiences very positive! We 10/10 recommend them.

Francis Plumbing & Heating has impressed me with their courteous and professional service from initial quote with advice that saved us hundreds of dollars and felt more like a masterclass in heating and ventilation than a sales pitch (thanks Ray) to follow-up communication without pressure from Ray and Jeff, to personal-touch front-office booking and communication, all the way to COVID-19 precautions during installation and obvious pride of workmanship from the technicians involved (Jeff, Ian, and Jordan H). The prices are fair, and competitive. The quality of the workmanship is top-notch. The customer service leaves the impression that Francis Plumbing & Heating is a reputable company is proud of their reputation, but doesn't rest on their laurels, and sees every project as an opportunity to earn your respect and future business.

Francis Plumbing was great! I was able to get the installation just a few days after my quote. Ian and Ray were great during the installation process, and when we discovered an issue with the installation, they were able to find me a suitable alternative and still install it on the same day.

We have used Francis Plumbing & Heating for three years now and have no regrets using them on each and every project. They are a stellar team of professionals I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for work to be done. They helped us on our new home to assess the plumbing, install outdoor faucets, get a new efficient water heater in, and to help us connect all our new appliances. We've had them back for furnace maintenance, new faucets, new toilets, etc. This week they installed a heat pump system for us and helped manage all the work to have an energy assessment for the available rebates. The new heat pump is amazing - quiet, efficient, and functions so well. The team at Francis is always friendly, kind, professional, and careful. They do clean work that is always really well managed, and they clean up fully after all their work. They are a fantastic group who communicates clearly, who let us know our options, and offer great financing too. We would work with no one else.

Types of ACs we Repair

Central air conditioners are the most common type of cooling solution for homes in Ottawa and surrounding areas. These efficient AC units utilize your existing ductwork to cool your entire home effectively and efficiently.

When it comes to repairing central air conditioners professional help is essential. Central air conditioning units have a complex setup, involving both indoor and outdoor components, making them a challenge to repair without proper training. At Francis Plumbing & HVAC, our team of skilled technicians possess an in-depth understanding of how to repair central AC systems in Ottawa.

Our technicians are well-trained in diagnosing and addressing issues specific to central air conditioners. Whether it’s troubleshooting problems with the evaporator coil, condensing unit, or refrigerant line we have the know-how to efficiently resolve any central AC repair issue that may arise.

Choosing Francis Plumbing & HVAC Ottawa for your central AC repair and servicing needs ensures that you’ll benefit from top-notch service and lasting solutions. Our commitment to customer satisfaction and our track record of delivering reliable air conditioner repairs make us the go-to choice for homeowners in Ottawa seeking dependable AC services.

More and more homes in Ottawa and surrounding areas are switching from air conditioners to heat pumps. These pumps work like central AC units in the summer providing cooling to the home, but they also provide heating in the winter. Recent advancements have made heat pumps even more effective in colder climates like Canada. Heat pumps run on electricity, and their efficiency impacts energy consumption and cost. In fact, you can even save up to $7,100 in up-front installation costs with rebates towards a new Heat Pump.

At Francis Plumbing and HVAC, we are experts in heat pump repair, and we follow a comprehensive approach to ensure your heat pump system operates flawlessly. Our skilled technicians thoroughly inspect the heat pump, identifying any issues that may affect its performance. From addressing refrigerant leaks and faulty electrical components to resolving compressor problems, we handle all heat pump repairs with precision and efficiency.

Signs your heat pump may need repair include inadequate heating or cooling, unusual noises during heat pump operation, inconsistent airflow, or an increase in energy bills. If you notice any of these signs, don’t delay – contact us promptly for professional heat pump repair services.

A split ductless heat pump, also known as a ductless HVAC system, presents an optimal solution for homes in Ottawa and surrounding regions lacking pre-existing ductwork. This scenario is especially prevalent in older residences in Ottawa, such as heritage homes, and properties equipped with hydronic heating methods like boilers, radiant floor heating, or radiators.

Our skilled technicians are well-equipped to handle various heat pump repair needs promptly and effectively in Ottawa and surrounding areas. Common types of split ductless heat pump repairs may involve addressing refrigerant leaks, electrical faults, malfunctioning components, or issues with the indoor and outdoor units. It’s essential to address these split ductless heat pump problems quickly to maintain optimal performance and energy efficiency of your unit.

While some minor maintenance tasks, such as cleaning or replacing air filters in heat pumps, can be done by homeowners, most heat pump repair tasks require professional expertise and specialized tools. Attempting complex repairs without proper knowledge can lead to further damage or void the manufacturer’s warranty of your split ductless heat pump unit.

We Are Proud of Our Accreditations:

1. Remove the AC Cover

In the fall and winter it’s important to cover your AC unit to protect it from the elements however, it is very common to forget to remove the cover come the warm weather. With the cover on, the air conditioner does not get enough airflow to function. If you’re having AC problems when you first turn on your AC double-check that the cover has been removed.

2. Set the Thermostat to Cool

Another common reason for an air conditioner not working is that the thermostat hasn’t been set to cool. Double-check your thermostat settings in the spring to ensure everything is set up properly for the warm weather.

3. Clean your Furnace Filter

This is the number one issue we find when called in for air conditioner repairs! Many homeowners don’t know that the filter in your furnace or air handler is used by your air conditioner as well. Over time the filter accumulates dust and other particles from the air, stopping them from circulating around your home. If you hold your filter up to the light and can’t see light through it, it needs to be changed.

4. Check the AC Breaker

The AC breaker can often get tripped or switched off by accident. If you notice the air conditioner breaker is flipped off just switch it back on. Easy fix! However, if the air conditioner itself is continuously tripping the breaker that’s a more serious repair.

5. Check the Outdoor Disconnect Box

The air conditioner disconnect box will be located outside near your air conditioning unit. It is used by air conditioner repair technicians when they are working on your system as a fail-safe to ensure the unit is not turned on while they work. Check that it is switched on.

Most Common AC Repairs

If your air conditioner is still not working after trying the easy fixes above you will need to look at calling in a reputable Ottawa area AC repair company to diagnose and fix the issue. Below we outline the most common air conditioner repairs and how difficult they are to fix.

Air Conditioners: Repair or Replace

Some air conditioner repairs are more expensive than others and a knowledgeable HVAC professional can help you determine whether repairing or replacing your AC is the best choice for your home and budget. That being said below we’ve outlined the major questions that need to be considered in this decision.

How expensive is the repair?

Depending on the AC system you have, the type of repair needed and the company doing the work the cost can range from $250 – $2000. Call us for a more accurate estimate. More expensive repairs like a broken compressor or blower motor are likely not worth investing in, especially on an older air conditioner.

Will the parts be covered by warranty?

Depending on the air conditioner part and the manufacturers, parts warranties range from 5 to 10 years. If all the parts you need to replace are still covered by warranty, repairing your air conditioner will likely be the best option.

How old is your air conditioner?

Air conditioners typically last for 12 to 15 years and as the equipment ages, repairs become more frequent and the efficiency of the system decreases. If you’re facing costly air conditioner repairs, it’s important to ask whether the repair will extend the lifespan of your equipment or if another repair will be necessary soon. In such cases, investing in a replacement might prove to be a better long-term investment.

How much do you pay for utility bills?

Modern air conditioners are significantly more efficient than older models. Investing in a new system can in many cases drastically reduce the home’s energy bills. A new high-efficiency system can often pay for itself in this way.

Air Conditioning Repair FAQs

The decision to repair or buy a new air conditioner depends on the age and condition of your current AC unit, as well as the cost of repairs. If your AC is relatively new, well-maintained, and the repair cost is reasonable, repairing it might be the better option. However, if the unit is old, requires frequent repairs or the repair cost is high, investing in a new, energy-efficient air conditioner could be more cost-effective in the long run. A knowledgeable HVAC professional can help you determine whether repairing or replacing your AC is the best choice for your home and budget.
The cost of a new AC unit can vary widely based on factors such as the brand, size, energy efficiency, and additional features. On average, a basic central air conditioning unit can range from $2,500 to $5,000, including installation.
Determining whether it’s worth fixing your AC depends on the specific issue, the age of the unit, and the repair cost. If the problem is minor, the AC is relatively new, and the repair cost is reasonable, fixing it is likely worth it. However, if the AC is old, requires frequent repairs, or the repair cost is significant, it may be more cost-effective to consider investing in a new unit. A HVAC professional can help advise you on your specific situation.

On average, a well-maintained air conditioner can last between 10 to 15+ years. However, the lifespan of an AC unit can vary depending on factors such as usage, maintenance, and the quality of the original installation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help extend the lifespan of the air conditioner and ensure optimal performance throughout its life.

Learn more about maintenance

If your AC is running but not cooling, there could be several reasons for this issue:

  • Dirty Air Filter: A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, reducing the cooling capacity of your AC. This is an easy replacement the homeowner can do themselves.
  • Refrigerant Leak: A refrigerant leak can lead to low refrigerant levels, causing the AC to blow warm air. This simple repair can be complicated if the leak is in a hard-to-reach area.
  • Dirty Condenser Coil: If the condenser coil is dirty it can obstruct airflow and hinder the cooling process. This is a simple repair for any HVAC professional.

To diagnose and fix the problem, it’s best to consult with a professional HVAC technician who can identify the specific issue and provide appropriate repairs.
