Furnaces are failing on Valentines day of all days – and the reason isn’t because the furnaces are breaking or broken. Over 90% of the calls we had for furnace failures and no heat emergency calls today have been caused by one thing – ice build up on the venting!
If your furnace goes off here is what you need to do:
Go outside and check the venting (it will either be white, grey or black pipe sticking outside your house), these often have condensation on them which in these extreme temperatures causes that moisture to freeze up. So what happens is your furnace is starving for oxygen. You need to break off the ice (without damaging the pipes) then restart the system.
This trick has worked with many of our customers and has saved them the cost of an emergency service call visit.
